Website Redesign vs Refresh: Which One is Right For You?

First impressions can make all the difference. Imagine walking into a job interview wearing your pajamas, or going to a black-tie function in workout gear? That’s not the first impression you want to make! If your website is out of date or not functional, that’s the impression you are giving to your visitors. According to Business.com, it takes 50 milliseconds (0.05 seconds) for a user to form an opinion of your website. It is the foundation of your brand and often the first point of contact between your business and potential customers. Making a good impression is crucial because you may not get a second chance.

Now the question is, do you need a website redesign or simply a refresh?

Website Redesign

If you answer yes to any of the statements below, it may be time to think about a website redesign:

  • Your website is more than five years old and is starting to look outdated.
  • Your website is difficult to navigate or use on mobile devices.
  • Your visitors are frustrated with your website and are unable to find the information they need.
  • You hate your website!

A website redesign is a complete overhaul of your website, including the structure or your content management system (CMS), design, and functionality. A website redesign can be a big investment of time and resources, but it can also pay off in the long run by improving your website’s performance, conversion rates, and user experience.

Website Refresh

Maybe your website is functioning fine and you don’t need an overhaul, but there have been some changes to your business or you want a fresh new look. If you answer yes to any of the statements below, it may be time to think about a website refresh:

  • You want to update your website’s branding to match your current marketing materials.
  • You want to add new content or images to your website.
  • You want to improve your website’s page load speed or mobile responsiveness.
  • You want to fix broken links or other minor errors on your website.

A website refresh is a less extensive update that focuses on improving the look and feel of your website, as well as making minor improvement to the content and functionality. A website refresh is typically less expensive and time-consuming that a website redesign, but it’s important to note that it won’t address any major issues with your website’s structure, design, or content.

We recently worked with our client Kansas Spine & Specialty Hospital to give their website a refresh. We first launched their site in 2013 and made adaptations over ten years. The content was up to date and relevant, but the look was starting to feel dated. We change the font and background color which brightened up the site giving it a sleek, clean look. We incorporated more visually appealing graphics to grab the user’s attention. We also added hover animation to buttons and boxes to add motion.

In addition, the original site did not have a responsive design leaving a lot of unnecessary extra space on each side of the site when viewing on a desktop. We made sure to fix this so the design adapts to a user’s device retaining its optimal usability and appearance regardless of the device it’s displayed on.
